LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC:
MORE GOLD MEDALS PLEASE!
A humble begining of 14 nations and 241 athletes in 1896 is what has transformed to London 2012 of over 10,000 athletes and over 200 Olympic recognized nations.
And where Venezuela will
ever be in jubilation over their first gold medal in 44years, Michael phelps just couldn’t help but amass 22 medals in 3 Olympics to be acknowledged the “greatest Olympic athlete of all time”.
So Nigerians, fret not about witches and wizards depriving
your athletes medals in this Olympic but pray that our athletes be able to attend
future
Olympics with honour, proper preparation and less boasting from our government officials. For the Olympic
Creed reads thus: “The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win
but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph
but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have
fought well.”
Athletes have had to finish their events in pain and with
no position on the result table but they left the stadium with ovations worthy
of champions.
The double amputee from South Africa did not
need a medal
to feel like a champion that had influenced his generation and the next.
You think a medal could replace what was felt by the female
athletes from Saudi Arabia who the stadium honoured with ovation for their
participation in the games?
Even false starters couldn’t afford to be ashamed because
the beautiful audience of the Olympic stadium were eager to show that all
you had to do was show up for your event to be given a champion’s ovation.
It can’t be true that it is because of the value of the
stones that the medal winners cry, dance, shout or become a hulk.
There is the listening to your
nation’s anthem aired in the midst of the gathered nations of the world as they
all pay respect to a champion amongst champions; among other reasons like knowing that it pays to work hard with
the world speaking through their applause that you deserve to be there!

The British have taught us that hosting an Olympic comes
with human errors but most importantly is the fact that a nation is made up of
children, physically challenged or not, history, partying teens,
construction workers, brand names like James Bond and David Beckham, a Queen willing to make
the world believe that she would jump from a helicopter to attend the games and
of course an orchestra that must have Mr. Bean play an instrument or was it a
note?
I watched with happiness the opening ceremony and the parade
of nations. I saw, by my estimation, the
most beautifully dressed athletes (from Cameroun) and I will not forget my wish
to have seen the flag of Syria hoisted among the nations of the world.
For Syria, I would dare to have another
wish of having the Olympic flame set afloat to the sky with a prayer
for peace upon that nation and other nations that could not be represented at
the games.
And if the winds of Britain would not carry the Olympic flame
fast enough across the sky to its destination, then please let Usain Bolt do us
the honour! I meant USAIN BOLT,
not Carl Lewis!
And if Bolt chooses to go to Jamaica first before going to Syria, not to worry, "our champion" is fast enough to handle it in good time!
This is a tribute to the host and athletes of
YOU ALL DESERVE GOLD!
